That's where the money was!
In "the olden days" -- when there were no planes, trains, or trucks--goods were transported by sea. It was a lot faster than travel by land. So robbing ships could be very profitable. A ship at sea: defenseless, and carrying valuable stuff. If you were a robber, wouldn't that sound good to you? :-)
(Willie Sutton was a famous American bank robber in the 1920s and '30s. When a reporter asked him, "Why did you rob all those banks?" he said, "Because that's where the money is.")

There was a time when England paid a Capetian to capture French ships and loot them and bring back the booty to the crown. Then England and France made a truce and the captains that once paid to loot the ships were told not to do so. Because of this, some captains turned to pirating to earn their money. Captain Kidd, Blackbeard were two famous pirates. Look up their stories and you'll have a good paper.

In the days of Queen Elizabeth, and before a defacto navy was formed, owners of ships could be granted letters of mark that authorised them to attack ships of a nation with which England was at war. These privateers, when they had letters of mark removed, or did not try to attain them, then became known as pirates

It was probably just because they wanted an easy way to earn money, even though stealing and killing isn't really classed as "earning".
They probably came from bad families, had no education and being a pirate sounded exciting.
