If it's a full bus, no empty seats, but only one elderly person remains standing would you give up your seat to him/her more readily based on his/her race?

If you don't ride the bus, substitute it for a busy waiting room or somewhere you identify with that has seats and can be busy.

On my ride in this morning, the bus got packed. I was on the inside seat of 2 seats. The girl next to me was even younger than I. I watched as a few people gave up their seats to elderly Black people. When a really, old, White guy got on, no one budged. I got up and gave him my seat but it really left me wondering why no one offered. I waited a bit thinking surely someone on one of the outside seats was going to let him sit.

I didn't know what that was all about.

Lady in Red: you would never give up your seat to anyone? Wow. Where I ride the bus there are signs posted indicated it's required to offer seats to disabled or elderly people.

That's sad that you wouldn't give up a seat to an elderly person. I hope it's only because you yourself are elderly or disabled.

Not at all. I give up seats on the train all the time for older people, or moms, or pregnant ladies. Anyone who looks like they'd have a harder time standing than me, I'll offer a seat to.

I tell you though, I wonder about people who don't. What are they thinking? What *aren't* they thinking? I don't let it bug me, because it's none of my business. But I think that if everyone made just that tiny bit of effort to be good to everyone else, we'd have a much happier, less stressed planet.

If an elderly person, pregnant person or a person who has an injury or looks tired comes in, and I'm not too tired myself, I will ask them if they want the seat.

A couple of years ago, I had a medical condition that made it difficult for me to stand up for any length of time. So during that time, I would not have been able to give up my seat. Now, I would give up my seat, unless I'm totally exhausted.

Just remember that a physical health problem may not always be evident. So a young person with a medical condition may need the seat over an older person who is in great shape physically. This is definitely a case where you cannot judge a book by its cover.

For me it wouldn't matter about the person's race. If it is an elderly person then why should they have to stand while someone my age is lazy and rude and just sits there? I would give them my seat.

The issue should never be race, there are people in need of all colors. If an old person needs a seat someone should give one to them.
Remember someday you might be that person and you should do unto others.

Besides my mom raised me to respect anyone that had knowledge or age.

no, race shouldn't matter. an elderly person is old, no matter what nationality they are. i have given my seat a couple times. you wouldn't want to think your grandma is standing up, trying to hold on while a bus is moving, would you? she could break a hip, or lose her dentures if driver slammed on breaks, it's just not a pretty picture.

Race matters none to me. I would gladly give my seat and place in line to a elderly person. What goes around comes around if not in this lifetime, then in the after life. To those who disagree with me, to each his own.

I give up my seat for anyone older than I, kids, and all females, regardless of race. I've stood for entire 5-hour bus rides.

Of coarse not that is ridiculous... I never have understood what the color of a persons skin, or where they were from had to do with anything... I would be up,and giving my seat away on a dime for whom ever needed it!! Take care, Marilyn :)
