I don't think that they are worth it. I understand that they run the risk of getting hurt when they play a game on the field, but so do millions of people that show up for work each day in much less paying jobs.

Yes players do make large amounts of money for playing football. But consider that the average NFL Career is only 4 to 5 years. Many players are smart with their money and do well after football, probably more are not smart and find themselves broke and jobless just a few years after their careers are done. Also even with the huge salaries the players are making, the league and the team owners are making even more. So why shouldn't the talent (the players) share in some of that cash?

I heard the sports casters say that every NFL game in week 5 sold out during the Cowboys v. Eagles game this Sunday. That is some major cash flow, and just in ticket sales.
NFL football makes the team owners millions. Winning teams make more money than losing teams. From a business standpoint it makes sense to pay high prices for the players that are going to help me win games. In the end I just make more money for it.
So, Yes. I would say they are worth it.

'In this country we have a free market. Supply and demand rule the day. The top professional sport stars get paid that much because out of all the people in the world they do the job the best. You can only find a few people in the world who can play like Payton Manning. On the other hand most anyone can be a cop, fireman or teacher. In this country and in the world there are millions of people who can do the job well. How important the job is does not matter that much. Hope that helps.

I think the salaries of all professional athletes are out of control. Not to mention celebrities.
I am a little more forgiving of professional football players, because the average lifespan of a professional football is shorter than the average person.
They might only be on the field for a few moments, but they take quite a punishment in that time frame.

it isnt life and death. but they do risk lives and limbs. granted they arent soldiers or cops they are athletes and in some case entertainers. actors make a lot of money too and they do far less than football players. its like what a lot of other people answered. television is very lucrative. the nfl has to assure its audience hey we got a good product and we want the public to watch and shell out a lot of dough. so when the public does it, you have to compensate your entertainers. if you didnt have the players, nobody would watch. its a cycle thats why they make so much money. and no most of them arent worth it. Look at Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, would you pay to seem them act an *** every week?

They are paid so much because they get people to watch. The NFL has a very lucrative contract with the media, not to mention ticket sales. If you think players are paid too much, stop watching them. If no one cared about football, they wouldnt get paid. So many people are so into football (i.e. buying jerseys... etc.) that they are only getting what they bring in.

well, actually, if you total up the amount of money people make off of them (endorement companies, investors, sponsors, owners, stores the sell appearal, cities with pro teams that attract tourists as a result, tv networks, radio networks, web-sites, and many many more people) then you would find that the players actually make somewhere around 40% of the money they are actually making other people. meaning they arent even close to the only one's getting rich off of their talent. meaning jerry jones and others like him are filthy rich off of football and havent most have never suited up a game in their life. i agree that it would seem other people deserve to get rich more, but if the player is getting the least of his.her pay, then it makes alittle more sense.
