There are any number of reasons for the check engine light to go on.
1. You may not be using all of your cylinders
2. There could be a problem with your emissions
3. There could be a short in the wiring...
whatever the reason, it needs to be run through a diagnostics machine to determine the cause. I would have it checked.

Usually it is the catalitic converter with that many miles. However it could be numerous items. Sadly most people are forced to take vehicles in to rip off repair shops and have the vehicle hooked up to a computer, which in return reads the issue. It could be as simple as a gas cap that is not working well. Put your hand over the exhaust and make sure you have back pressure coming out. This at least will tell you if the converter is blocked, which is a dangerous problem. If your state does not require emmissions as part of inspection, don't worry too much. A 94 cougar with that many miles is a throw away car anyway. In other words the repairs (if major at all) will exceed the replacement cost!

I agree with dfksaturn, take it to Auto zone or Advance Auto.
However my check engine light came on due to a dirty gas cap that would not seal correctly and it caused an emissions leak. Replaced the cap and the light went out. It also came on when our catalytic converter went out.
They have a little computer they hook up to your car and it reads what is wrong to be sure you fix the right thing.

I was told by a mechanic that auto manufacturers set the warning lights to go off at set times for maintenance checks. The only way to know for sure is have a mechanic check it out for you. You may have a problem, or it could be nothing at all and you will have to have the light reset, as I did.

take it to either AutoZone or Advance Auto and they can find out for sure what it is... but from experience... it's could either be your Oxygen Sensor (1 or 2) or your flex pipe could either be clogged up or falling apart which in turn will cause your Oxygen Sensor to kick on the Check Engine light....

I don't know. You should probably check your engine.
Checker Autoparts will check it for you and tell you what the problem is.
