There are two things going on right now that could lead to our downfall.

One - the horribley imbalanced trade deficit. Sooner or later, that leads to a country being a "buyer only" nation, held at will by the rest of the world (look to Rome in history).

Two - the army being spread too thin for adequate defense. This is happening right now. Again look to Rome in the history books for a lesson.

"Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Wow; Thirty-one answers in fourteen minutes. Bring up America and the whole world wants to put in its two-cent's worth. The Bible lists in prophecy eight world powers that would affect God's people. It started with the Hebrew, affected by 1. Egypt; 2. Assyria; 3. Babylon; 4. Media and Persia; 5. Greece; 6. Rome; then upon the Christian congregation, 7. Britain & America combined, and finally, 8. The United Nations, representing all the nations of the present world. Obviously, in history, there are other great powers, such as the Ptolemaic Egyptians of the third century B.C.E., the Carthaginians of the same period, and the Mongols of the thirteenth century C.E., among others. However, these entities had no direct effect upon either the Jews up to the time of Christ, or the Christians. The march of world powers has taken place precisely as the Bible described it. So, what is next? The Bible indicates that the nations of the world, through the U.N., will combine their resources to remove all forms of religion, a reasonable goal in these times of incredible distress often engendered by religious hatred among different groups. This action will generate from the United Nations a declaration that "peace and security" have been achieved. That cry will precipitate an attack upon the remaining religiously inclined entity, the true Christian congregation, God's true people. For carrying out this attack, the Bible's loving God will destroy all the members of the United Nations Organization, along with their military forces and their millions, if not billions, of supporters, worldwide. Thus the way will be made clear for the earth to be transformed into a paradise, since all those left alive will be lovers of God. What is now the United States of America, Canada, Europe, the countries of the former Soviet Union, along with every other country. continent, and island, will be changed into a delightful paradise. Psalm 37:11 will be fulfilled, and "the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." Then with the greatest of joy, those survivors will welcome back the resurrected dead, including those who died in World Wars I and II and every other war ever fought in human history. Apocalypse/Revelation 21:4 will come true and "Death will be no more." Even "Hell" will be emptied of those dead in it. What a beautiful prospect for the survivors! Agape. Eug.

The United States will not be "gone" for a very, very long time. But Islamic terrorism and the continuing proliferation of WMD threaten the position of the U.S. quite considerably. By the year 2100 I expect that the United States will have the fourth leading economy in the world (with China, India and Japan holding the first three positions). Whether this constitutes a "fall" is debatable. As for me, I will be happy if the world just survives to the ripe old "age" of "2100"!

That's a good question. I wonder about the Roman Republic and how it grew into the Roman Empire. Then it fell.

At what point does an Empire begin to fail? Is it government corruption, greed, gluttony, maybe even lust? I don't have these answers, but I can feel a strong demand for change in this country, because its going down hill.

My opinion. If the U.S. does not end its need for greed and doing so at all costs it wil collapse.

no sign of it "falling" in the short or medium term. As a nation state it is reasonably structurally stable. Its nationalism (whatever anyone thinks about the jingoism associated) is largely inclusive and capable of change over time, As long as it remains an adaptive state it is likely to survive. It is likely though that it will be substantially different in the future, perhaps Spanish will be the dominant language and perhaps it will resemble Argentina in terms of relative economic wealth vis a vis the future world leaders but it will have recognisable features as well.

There is absolutely no way to predict that. Another question might be how long the United States will last as a super power.

Well, using Copernican principles of time viewing, there is a 97.5% stastical probability that America will last at least 6 more years. Of course, there's also a 97.5% chance that it will die in the next 8970, so that shows how much statistics know.

Depends. If the leftists and Dems gain lasting power, the descent will be pretty quick. If the moderates and GOP, it will be a little slower. If conservatism and constitutionality gain power, it will last a long time.

BTW, Mumia is a murderer. A scumbag. Anybody who'd quote that piece of garbage...
