Liberals are all about free speech. Burn the flag, defame the President, all in the name of free speech.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But the second I make a comment such as "I do not think there should be a scholarship only for African-Americans", the first thing I hear from the liberal corner is

"RACIST!!!"

What happened to free speech???

Liberals only want Liberals to have free speech.
They are against free speech for anyone else.

There are whackos on both sides. I'm a complete liberal democrat, and while I may not agree with other people, I value their right to express their opinions. I also value my own right to express my own opinion.

If someone calls you a racist because of a viewpoint, that person is being immature. The easiest thing to do is to slap a label on you. An intelligent person would ask you why you think that there should not be a scholarship only for African-Americans.

You most likely have intelligent viewpoints to support your opinion. Until the person you are talking to knows why you feel that way, they can't intelligently proceed in the conversation. Once they know why you feel the way you do, they can then either agree or disagree with you by throwing back their own viewpoints with you.

A person who calls you a racist after hearing a simple statement is a person who deals in absolutes and is not worth your time.

I don't think it comes down to liberals and conservatives as much as it comes down to maturity and intelligence.

What makes you think that there are scholarships only for African-Americans? There should be scholarships for you too, you just have to look for them. Maybe it was the way you posed the question. What I don't understand is how anyone can assume that just because someone objects to your question that they have to be labled a liberal. Liberals and conservatives believe in free speech. This is America!

No one said that you couldn’t say that African-Americans can’t have a scholarship. In fact, you can, in fact, I think you just did. You have the right to say anything you want including “I hate hippies”.

My question to you is why do we have to hate? Why can’t we agree to disagree? I disagree with most of the bile and venom that comes from the right wing media outlets (i.e.: O’Reilley, Hannity, Limbaugh, Fox News, etc.) and they have a right guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” as do you.

I don’t have to agree with what you say, nor do I even have to pay attention. In fact you don’t have to pay attention to what I’m typing right now. That’s what makes this the best country in the World. We can have a discussion, we can disagree with the government, and we (for now) don’t have to be worried about being arrested, or worse by doing so.

You may want to do a bit more research when making sweeping generalizations about a particular group. I don’t agree with most conservatives on most points, BUT I do believe that they have the right to say what they do, whether I agree with it or not.

I will close with a quote from a 1980’s era controversial conservative, Morton Downey, Jr. who said when asked about his show, “There are two buttons on your set, one to change the channel and one to shut it off!”

Still haven't come to grips with how the free speech thing works, eh?

Your example is a good one for how free speech functions. You say you don't like black scholarships, someone says you're a racist.

That's how free speech works. It aint pretty and it aint fair.

You might like to know there are many, many scholarships available based on numerous criteria. So, your premise about scholarships is wrong, but it doesn't necessarily make you a racist, just uninformed.

Hold on a sec. Just because you get a negative reaction does not mean you don't have free speech. You have no right to not get negative responses from other people voicing their free speech rights.

If you want to talk about leftists' concerns for free speech, look at university speech codes, workplace harassment laws, and European laws against speech. Each of these limit speech in an unconstitutional way - they deprive people of their human right to free speech. Each are based on some subjective requirement to not cause offense to the allegedly aggrieved party.

These are the handiwork of leftists, who use the coercive and forceful power of government to undermine our rights.

I think a lot of people on both sides are all in favor of "free speech" as long as people agree with them. In our current political climate, it seems we have a lot of split personalities who want to shut the mouths of people who's opinions differ from theirs. It takes intelligent and dignified people to accept opposing viewpoints without getting upset and making impulsive retorts (and even they succumb to it occasionally).

I do agree though that a lot of leftists in this country throw the race card out as a matter of course since it allows them to deflect any criticism and shut down honest debate. Some conservatives also do the same thing with the liberal/socialist/commie card. I used to get mad but when I was in the College Republicans, I quickly learned that I could make my Young Democrat counterparts come unglued by calmly talking and ignoring their outbursts. The more I smiled, the madder they got.

Your argument is horribly, inherently wrong. A liberal will defend your right to say racist things. It's also their free speech right to call you a racist (I think that's way over-stating the case and I think "racist" gets flung about far too freely these days).

However, it's not taking away your rights to free speech for someone to call you a racist for what you say.

If they ask the government to make it illegal to say what you say, then you're talking about the elimination of free speech rights. Until someone does that, you're simply asking for the right not to be called a racist - and that right does not exist.

Okay pal..........who you talking to? Seems like someone who does not want to converse with you about this subject so they scream out "Racist". The conservatives do it too, very fast to call you names like "traitor" when they do not have an argument to back up their beliefs. Not just the liberals but any air head who does not want to talk about the issue. See I just did it too. Free speech is necessary to have to maintain freedom. Do we practice it enough? Probably not.

It's because of free speech that you can make idiotic comments that are racist. It doesn't mean that us, well-adjusted human beings can't use our freedom of speech to inform you of your stupidity.

My suggestion is stay in your Deliverance esque town (You sure do have a pretty mouth), and stay away from the normal segement of society!

That's freedom of speech BABY!
