I love punk, but nowadays everything from Good Charlotte to Green Day to Panic! At the Disco is classified as punk. They aren't punk, they're pop. Real punk- The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, X, The Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion (to name a few)- inspires change. Today's music pretty much sucks- not because of the way it sounds necessarily, but because the majority of it doesn't have any real substance. There's no message, and when there is, it's generally forced. The Sex Pistols inspired change- a movement- with their attitude. Groups like Bad Religion and The Clash had meaningful lyrics that said something IMPORTANT, as opposed to wasting time whining and complaining. A song about an ex-girlfriend or feeling left out is alright every now and then, because those are real feelings. But there's a whole world full of problems, so I don't understand how today's artists can concentrate so much on their own. Hehe... Sorry about the tangent. Why do I like punk? I like punk- real punk- because it inspires change, because it makes a statement, because of the I-don't-give-a-**** attitude and because it makes me feel both that the problems of the world are real and important (more so than my own, which I know is true) and, at the same time, that what other people think about me shouldn't, and doesn't, matter. I can be who I want with punk, regardless of... pretty much anything.

Punk music was an evolution. Due to the large number of Afro-Caribbean people coming to the GB (a good thing in my mind), lots of white people had their ears opened to Reggae for the first time. Reggae clubs were popular among the clubgoers in the south in particular, because up here in the north we were loving 'Northern Soul', but also had a fringe reggae movement.
As white boys couldn't sing like a great soulful black voice, and because they were also influenced by the rock scene which they had grown up with before discovering reggae, they developed a slightly harder guitar orientated style, like the Clash with Guns of Brixton, or Magnificent 7. Also. generally, white boys look very silly with 'funky-dreads' (sorry Green, from Scritti Politti), so developed the skinhead hairstyle. Many less talented musicians than Strummer jumped the bandwagon, and also because of discontent in 70s politics and life (strikes, racism, heavyhanded policing of youths), many bands started to develop a harder edge to their music, after all 'anger is an energy' (Mr Lydon). This frustration fuelled anger also suited the feel of many youths in the troubled N Ireland, leading to such notables as the Pogues (keeping a folk rather than rock edge), Undertones and SLF.
Most punk fans enjoy the idea of protest, of venting their anger without violence, the great riffs, and often poignant lyrics. Often its simplicity can be its beauty.
Unfortunately, the BNP and National Front stole the skinhead clothing and hair, and some so-called punk bands appeared and corrupted it all.
'At the Edge', 'Bank Robber' and even 'Ca plane pour moi' are still as pertinent today as they ever have been, and sound great.

I'm a punk fan. It's far more rebelious than other music. but the term punk rock has changed over the years. for example: true punk such as the work of the sex pistols, the basteds, stiff little fingers and the ramones is now seen as some kind of heavy metal, whereas stuff like greenday, sum 41, busted, and my chemical romance is now seen as punk, when it is actually pop punk. Of course one of the least punk things I can do is answer this question.

I think punk rock has fans who are rebelling against something. Each person has their own rebellion. Punk concerts are a place where like minded people can be with their peers. it's similar to any gathering; sports bars, churches, knitting clubs, Star Trek conventions.

PS-my answer is not in consideration of the "punk" MTV bands. If your mommy buys the cd for you, than it's not punk. Punk exists at small filthy clubs filled with kids who snuck out of their bedroom windows to get there.

I think most people like punk rock music because of the guitars and drums. They really add an emotional effect to the music. I totally agree that the lyrics rock, and are much more creative than rap!
Most punk rock music, like Simple Plan, has lyrics which people (especially teens) can relate to. I think that's why most of them listen to this genre.

i love punk. the fast-paced music, the anti authority lyrics, the anti conformist style and clothes. even though i'm working 2 jobs, raising a child and living a semi-normal life, i crank up some punk rock in the car and for a few minuets i'm raging against the machine.
