You are looking for the Antebellum period that lasted from 1865 to about 1900. Some Historians push the period even further to the time the USA became involved in WWI. The best place to begin would be with Shelby Foote's info on the Civil War, particularly the last year and all that occurred. Then look up information on the presidents that served from Lincoln to Teddy Roosevelt. All had a hand in shaping the antebellum world.
Additionally, Grant had a huge hand in shaping the South.
Lastly, if your local library has microfiche, you coudl actually read newspaper articles from papers at the time.

As there have been several civil wars around the world it would be useful to know which one :)

Assuming it is the American one then the article on wikipedia would be a useful place to start (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_civil_war). There is alot of information out there on the internet but this article would be a good place to start as it also has links to many websites which may help you.

As it is specifically you want to find out about after the civil war the following page which deals with the consequence of the law on different areas may help as well.
