Might answer in part your question. Back in the 19th century, the female orgasm was not a recognised phenomena. Not by the men at least. However, if a female had a difficult headache she might be lucky enough to have a physician who could give her relief. He would manually 'manipulate' the clitoris until 'relief' was experienced by the female client. As you may or may not be aware, the hormones released during orgasm can act as an analgesic (painkiller).

The only possible problem I can think of is decreased sensitivity during actual intercourse because you get used to the "way" that you stimulate yourself, which may not be the way you are stimulated during actual sex.
On the other hand, you learn what gives you pleasure and you are then able to communicate that better to your partner.
