The best source for economic data in the web (provided you are looking for macro data) is the Penn World Table. It provides free data from 1950-2004 for 150+ countries. This data is used in lots and lots of research papers and has the added advantage that is comparable (you can compare GDP per capita of Zambia in 1986 with GDP per capita of the US in 1999 and the error measurement is gone, thus ensuring the validity of the comparison). Just type PWT in google and it is the 2dn or 3rd link. You can get the data in excel, .csv, html and sas.
If you want more data series for the period 1960-1999 and for 120+ countries, type "Easterly lost decades dataset" and you will get to a page in the world bank with download links. It has data divided in 4 excel sheets: Macro, Micro, Government and Social/Fixed factors. In total you may have over 80 different series. It is a huge and also widely used data set in the economic literature.
Yet another place is Worldinfigures.com. It reliable and very user-friendly, although you are not able to download the data for excel or .csv.
If you are looking for makret data (stocks, bonds, interest rates, etc), go to Reuters, Bloomberg or Yahoo Finance.
All the sources in here are free.
