Personally I feel that to be a great designer you need to know what is available for your use. Knowing the newest technology will help you have more of an edge on the other designers in your field. If you stop learning you never know what you could be missing.

Ya gotta know what's out there.Even if you have limited skills from a technology standpoint you gotta know what's going on.

Think of it this way. You have a project and it takes you 3 days to complete. Your competion has the new latest and greatest gizmo and can get it done better in half the time. Who's the work going to go to?

Even if you don't have the latest version of something try and get an older version to get aquainted with it. Skills will come with time. Then after you got some good gigs going you can upgrade.

It depends of what kind of designer you mean.
I'm a graphic designer myself and it's impossible to keep on working with old programmes and technology. In one way or the other you come in contact with the newer programmes, and you need to keep updating all the time... Otherwise you get isolated. New software, means new computers and visa versa. I think this is the case in any kind of business where computers are involved...

To give you some kind of proof: 15 years ago they worked in a whole different way to make a design than nowadays. Now we do photo-editing ourselves, make a whole design and deliver to the printers. In 'the old days' you could instruct someone to make your design but it was more cut and paste, and you were never really sure of the endresult...

So, what concerns graphic design: the answer is YES, try to keep up to date!

I think you need both, a great creative edge and also the technological skill and knowledge set to produce and output art when printing
