Injured myself in the Navy and was on crutches for a long time. Earned the nickname "hopalong". Everyone, including people I didn't necessarily know, but they saw me all the time would call me it. I've since been medically discharged, and I still need to use a crutch, and since my husband's still in the Navy, I get to see a lot of the people I knew when I was in. And they still call me it. There was even a brief period of time, while I was going through physical therapy, that I didn't use my crutch, and I was still called "hopalong".
