Yes. In most states if you are on salary you are required to work when your boss has requested it. He should give you a different day off to compensate for your attendance to a training event.
If he writes you up it is because you were expected to be at the training event for the benefit of you and the company.
Please keep in mind that employers pay for you to be there.

I would think that they can. However if its ongoing and taking advantage of you this is unacceptable. Then you may want to negotiate another day off in lieu of.
Remember training is a investment they make in you.

Yes that's what stinks about being salary. I do believe they have to give you so many hours in advance. I would look at your employee handbook.
