Hotmail does not allow forwarding to other accounts. If you've had the Hotmail account for a certain length of time, they DO allow you to use POP3 mail GMail also allows POP3, so you can set both to download to Outlook Express or Thunderbird.

Check your hotmail account to see how long you've had it (newer accounts are not eligible for POP3 downloading).

Get ePrompter http://eprompter.com . It sits in your system tray and will tell you when you have messages in your various inboxs. It supports multiple accounts and hotmail, yahoo and several others that you wouldn't expect. It is also free.

Many free accounts do not support forwarding since the ads on the sites are the reason they exist.
