Its raining outside right now, and there was this squirrel up in a tree waving his tail in the most psychedalic way. It was flowing in an "S" shape & I was wondering why squirrels do this.

The squirrel uses its tail for many things, its primary function is for balance. This enables the squirrel to maneuver quickly without falling. It is also used as a parachute, should the squirrel fall. It can act as a blanket in the Winter. Squirrels also use their tail to communicate with other squirrels or other animals...or us! Usually if a squirrels tail is twitching or moving it means he is agitated in some way..Or nervous because you're watching him...

We have a pet squirrell , well not so much a pet but he thinks we are the local restaurant. They wave their tail around when their is danger around or when their is another squirrell who wants to poach their dinner or whatever. Cute little things but bits ruddy sore. Our squirrell sit at the front door and makes strange noises to call me for peanuts or bread with peanut butter on it. Loves biscuits as well, hubby says it will eat anything because it is a tree-rat:)
