An actor tries out for a part in a play but he is a mild, meek person. He tries out for the part of Stanley in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and once he gets the part he continues to stay in character as Stanley until the play is over and returns to a mild, meek person. It was out in the early 70's. Any ideas?

Yes, it's called "Who Am I This Time?" (actually, early '80's, not early 70's) and starred very young Christopher Walken and Susan Sarandon.

The film was based on a short story by Kurt Vonnegut - and there is now a stage adaptation available.
