Well, you describe the problem pretty extensively but there's not enough info there to help me answer your question...
What file is it, is it a Windows Media file, real player, quick time? You can tell that from the file's extension. (Use tools-->folder options-->view to show known extensions). You might be missing a codec or it might simply be a damaged file.
Alternatively, trying downloading the KMPlayer, it usually works with most video files.
EDIT: I made an assumption earlier but it's better to make that clear - when you said that you downloaded a torrent, you mean a video file using torrents right?

most torrents use screwy formats, so you just need to go to google, type in DJCPB Codec Pack, dowload and Install. Then open the file with Windows Media Player. Works every time for me.

VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

depends on what kinda format they ripped it into, some mediaplayer wont play certain formats.
I mainly use WiNDVD,Windows Media Player,DivX and VLC Media Player on my computer.
The last one plays bin files wich those other players wont play, and you dont have to burn em on dvd first in order to play the bin files with VLC.
You could also try to mount the image with Daemon Tools to play in whatever DVD Player Software you have installed on your computer.
Here are the links to the essentials mentioned.

And if you ever experience problems with picture or sound,
