People know they are taking risk when they eat out, but sometimes there is just no other choice. Ya gotta eat even if it is germ overed and been spit on. ... Adds flavor :-p

I work at a smokey bones and there are a few things that go on like this but really for the most part it's really quite sanitary.
It's really all about your percieved reality. Frankly we all eat totally disgusting things every day -- from ground beef to fruit juices, so much crap happens to your food that you really DON'T want to know about.
Honestly, in the end, by the last step, there are only a few truely gross things that could spoil the meal, for the most part I just don't want to know about it.
The food in post-industrial countries ain't perfect, and it damn sure isn't clean. But it's almost always infection/disease free, is rid of anything that will cause immediate harm to you, and tastes pretty good. Despite how lackluster that sounds, you won't find that in less fortunate countries -- just be glad your water doesn't have HIV.
Also, just for the record, make sure you do pay attention to where you eat! Because improper storage, cooking, and serving of meals can really bring out some nasty NASTY stuff -- much nastier than someone coughing on your food.

Did you know that some burger joints use purified maggots as filler in their burgers? And bug protein is part of the coating on flies? Or that fast food milkshakes have digestable plastic as filler in them? I've seen people pick up burgers off the floor and serve them. I've worked at 6 major fast food chains, I dknow exactly what you are talking about! Doesn't stop me from eating maggot burgers when there is nothing else around though. I've seen employees pee into the pickle bucket before too. One place I worked at was shut down cuz an employee stabbed a customer through the drive-thru window with the salad knife. Supposedly the knife was still used to make salads. Obviously the cops took it as evidence.

I worked at Wendy's when I was a teenager. NEVER eat the chili. I guarentee that every batch has been made with an extra special loogey, and I even saw someone pee in it once.

I worked in several restaurants through college. I never saw anything like what you're talking about happen. For crying out loud, if the corn bread came out lopsided it was tossed.

This is the same across ALL restaurants. I know it (I used to work in a casual dining restaurant), but I just don't think about it. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger -- congesting germs and dirt will strengthen your immune system.

since you see this it is your job to go to your manager and let them know what is going on, at this time it will be on your shoulders when someone either gets sick or finds what you people put in their food.
