Because it is just to difficult to open the back door and call your kid by "hey, One Million Four Hundred and Fifty Six Thousand Nine Hundred and Thirty Eight, come to dinner". Geez.

The government takes care of naming our children. We are allowed to assign our little pet names for them, but to the government of the USA, they will always be a 9-digit number.

Go work at a giant corporation and you will be sure to find people with the same exact name. Now use the same system over an entire country. You'd get soooo confused!!!

Since we are all numbers, we already do. Isaac Asimov dealt quite entertainingly with this subject in one of the scienc essays he wrote in the 1960's.
