A sandbox is a genereal term for a test environment or "play" area that is usually for developer testing of software.

It is a testing area. Usually not intended for bugs, but for future users to get an idea of what the interface looks like, how certain features work, and what some of the reports might look like.

This is usually a good idea when the user community either has limited computer knowledge or if the requirements are so vague that you want someone to approve on what you are doing as you go.

However, sandboxes can be dangerous traps (pun intended). Mainly because they suggest an open end to modifying the product in and endless cycle known as "scope creep". This can prevent a product from ever reaching production. So I only advise using a sandbox if you need to do pre-training before the production release, or if you need to show an example on something that had one vague requirement, but let the users know that it is ONLY the one requirement you will be reviewing.

Everything else should be fairly well described as requirements before you began coding. SAVE YOURSELF!!! Avoid the sandbox!

S4G is an open source user level sandbox designed for grid technologies. It offers a secure execution environment for untrusted applications. Efficient and lightweight, it does not require to modify your linux kernel, to insert a specific module nor to have special administrator rights.

It has originally been designed for XtremWeb, an open source desktop grid project but can be used for other purposes than grid computing
