We just bought the house & the basement smells like a bar. What can I put in the steam cleaner to remove these odors?
Ive already tried 2 different kinds of carpet deotorizers - they work for a few hours. I am going to steam clean them this weekend and need to have something to put into the steam cleaner.

Hi
I would recommended using a disinfectant like Milgo SR (may need to go to a janitorial supply store for this and ask for a disinfectant for carpet) and put it in the rinse water. Deodorizers just cover up the smell for a while and disinfectant kill bacteria in the carpet. I would also wash the walls with this product.

Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet

I agree, you need to wash the walls, the ceiling, floors, carpet, everything in that room. I find that if you sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it sit overnight and then vacuum it up, that will help a lot. Use the cleaner that is recommended for the type of steam cleaner you are using.

Expel Odor Neutralizer

we bought a house and it had horrible odor problems.
I put Expel in my carpet cleaner and it worked perfectly.
Also, instead of regular carpet shampoo, I used Tide with Bleach alternative. Less expensive and worked better.

Formula 409 spray carpet cleaner works really good. i always use it after i have parties. You just spray it on and then vaccuum it up. ( I always leave it for an extra long time- sometimes overnight- seems to work really well). Also, if you have curtains, you'll need to wash those to get the cigarette smell out of the room.

Have you washed the ceiling and the walls?
That will help.
Don't repaint until you have done so.
