Hedgehogs do not smell like hampsters or other rodents. That said, you do need to clean their cage or I'm sure it would start to stink.

Hedgehogs are not solely nocturnal. Mine sleeps part of the day and part of the night. He makes very little noise at night - never enough to keep me up or wake me up. Defintely the opposite of a hampster. That said, if you do get yours a wheel, there's no guarantee that it won't run on the wheel a little during the night. The wheels do make noise. Wheels are not a necessity and mine does not have one. I give him paper towel or toilet paper cardboard rolls instead, and let him run around outside of his cage a lot.

So long as you take your time selecting your hedgehog, you should never have a problem with biting. Hissing sounds are ok, they just signify that the hedgehog is scared. Clucking sounds are a sign of aggression. If you haven't gotten one yet, do not get one that clucks. That said, I have never been bit by a hedgehog and have been both hissed and clucked at. Instead, you will more than likely be poked (which honestly doesn't hurt). When mine doesn't want to be held or doesn't know the person holding him, he curls up into a ball, sort of, which makes his spines more pointy.

I wouldn't "poke" your hedgehog to wake it up. The proper method of picking one up is to scoop your hand under it's belly from the back side - you won't get poked this way.

nicolharres has the right idea - I think most everyone else is thinking of the hedgehogs found in the wild in places like England. In the US African Pygmy hedgehogs are quite common as pets. I have had 3 in my lifetime. They arent smelly as long as you keep their cage clean with fresh bedding every other day. As nicolharres stated, you would NOT want to poke it to wake it up, this will provoke very bad behavior (biting) and mistrust. If you wake it up gently by talking to it or picking it up by scooping it up with your hands, you'll have a much better relationship.

They can get noisey at night, depending on the kinds of toys you leave in. I had a wheel and a few other things, and the wheel always bounced off the side of the cage. This type of noise can easily be remedied.

Who would want a Hedgehog as a pet anyway? They'd be hard to handle. Any animal wouldn't like being poked at and woken up during the day time when it's a nocturnal animal. Leave the poor thing alone.

Don't know if they are smelly. I think they would only be if the aquarium or cage wasn't cleaned out atleast once a week.

The hedgehog will be too scared of you to do anything apart from roll up into a ball whenever it sees you, you about 50 times its size. They don't smell but are very unhygeanic - they carry loads of fleas and ticks. If you poke it, it will wake up and then see you and curl into a ball. They are not noisy animals.

Hedgehogs dont smell at all. They are totally harmless but i do wish they had large teeth to bite kids that poke at them with sticks and kick them around like foot-balls. Leave them be in nature where they belong. And yes , they make a lots of noise when mating we have two living in our garden. :)
