If it wasn't Howlin' Wolf.....then perhaps it was The Who with Baba O'Riley?

In 1958 a guitarist named Link Wray recorded an instrumental called "Rumble " which, with its power chords and overall sound is considered by some to be the grandfather of heavy metal ( it was actually banned on some stations as sounding too "evil"). I've also heard early Blue Cheer ("Summertime Blues", "Out Of Focus') described as proto-metal even though they were technically a acid/psychedelic band.

It depends how far you want to go back. Some say Black Sabbath, some say Led Zeppelin but, argueably 'Helter Skelter' by The Beatles is heavy metal and depending on your definition, 'You Really Got Me', by The kinks could be classified as the first heavy metal song.

Check out early Deep Purple (In Rock?). All the HM cliches were already in place by 1970 - but that's because other, non HM artists had already been laying the ground...
Check out some of Jimi Hendrix's stuff from the late 60s - the RU Experienced album smells of HM and it'sm from 1967.
Then everyone was doing it - even the Beatles (listen to Helter Skelter on the White Album, 1968)

Black Sabbath is considered the first Heavy Metal band because of the way guitarist Tony Iommi tuned his guitar. After an industrial accident left him with shorter fingers than most people, Iommi tuned his guitar down so the strings weren’t as tight, therefore easier for him to play. Sabbath’s uniquely lower sound, along with their trudgy style, was the beginning of Metal.

I would have said Black Sabbath as many popular music experts have defined them as the Fathers of Heavy Metal. But this article on this history of the name in Wikipedia gives some credit to Steppenwolf's "Born to be wild" for the lyric "Heavy metal thunder" and later a review in Creem magazine.

the first recorded heavy metal song was black sabbath by black sabbath before black sabbath had given themselves a name. one of the members of the band had a dream where a balck figure stood before him and he told the dream to ozzy who wrote the song black sabbath after the figure in his dream which later became the name of the band obviouslly. it was not led zepplin. that is a misconseption because both bands started in the same year, but black sabbath was the first of them to record a song. the led zepplin recorded led zepplin 1. black sabbath nvr an album but it was recorded and later discarded for much better songs like iron man and paranoid.

led zeppelins,'' whole lotta love'' i believe it to be Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin were innovators who never lost mainstream appeal. While the band is perhaps best known as pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, they also drew inspiration from many other musical genres, including blues, rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, jazz, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, folk, pop, Latin and country

I think it was The Beatles song 'Helter Skelter' from their 1968 eponymous album, better known as The White Album.

Next up was 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath, which was released in 1969.
