I think a good counselor is one that has walk a similar path. One that has had on a life changing experience themselves, open enough to able to see a person for an experience, without judgment but more like a friend helping someone explore their soul. A good Psychiatrist will ask questions in a way that exposes the patients own answer....Until the light turns on, if you will.
Kids get all messed up with problems that come from parents that had problems, it passed on in a loop.
I have always felt if we love our children and teach them respect and show some respect, and raise them in a way in which we would like to be treated. They grow up to be healthy adults.

Because contemporary mental health is no longer interested in the "mental" treatment of people, but has become a purely intellectual activity where denial of empathy, intuition, and psychic insight have been replaced with "thinking about". Each person seen becomes like a puzzle piece in he practitioners never ending theorizing about what might be. Ignorance is glorified by theoretical ideation as a practical means of denial of ones ignorance.
