I used to have a rabbit who would do this most nights, usually in the middle of the night. It was very loud, and always woke me up! I think he was afraid of the dark.

By the way, I always checked to see if anything unusual was happening when he thumped, but nothing ever was. Might have been bad dreams.

(Whoever said rabbits are quiet never owned a rabbit!)

the thumping is a normal reaction and part of what rabbits in general do. here is some information that i found on why they do thump..
rabbit thumps to communicate with other members of his species, and family bunnies do this instinctively. There are different types of thumps that indicate different things, and by studying his body language when he thumps, you can determine just what he's trying to tell you.

A loud thump made with a very erect, alert body, legs and ears stiff and tall, is usually an alarm call. He's heard or smelled something he considers dangerous! His eyes will usually be very wide, and he may take very small steps while staying as tall as possible, trying to see what's alarmed him.

Rabbits also thump when they're excited about a treat or a new animal in the household. They thump when they're playing, when they're frustrated at not getting their way, and sometimes just because they want to get your attention.

i hope this helps. good luck

All rabbits thump. In the wild it was to warn other rabbits of danger, normally a predator. Although rabbits have been domesticated, rabbits still do this. Don't worry about foxes stalking your bunnies though, it's normal for them to do this, they probably are just upset about something little. Some rabbits will thump if you try to pick them up or when you clean their cage and rearrange all their things. Rabbits thump for a few reasons. The main one being to communicate with other rabbits. Rabbits in the wild live in burrows, and while one rabbit may be up on the surface, several others are underneath in the tunnels. The one on the surface will thump hard on the ground in any number of patterns for different things. They have one pattern for "danger coming", they have another pattern for "all clear". Rabbits will also thump to display dominance, and to mark territory. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me directly at: kbviolin_98@yahoo.com

Yep, this is normal rabbit behaviour. They do it if they feel threatened, for example if they hear a loud noise, or you go to pick them up and they don't want to be picked up.

So try to see what's happening at the time of foot thumping. It also is used to ward off enemies.
