About 2 weeks ago I was doing a reverse donut (I know brilliant) in my 2000 Cavalier. Mid-rotation I lost power steering. Now my power steering only works when the car has been parked for about 2 hours and then it only works for about 5 -10 minutes. I also hear knocking sounds coming from the steering column when I turn the wheel. Also, starting about 2 days ago, the transmission has started to slip. That only happens when getting on the gas mid-way through a left hand turn. The revs climb freely, then catch, I get a jolt through the drivetrain, and then my wheels spin before they hook back up. I'm hoping to get through the winter with the car and then turn it into my permanent winter runner as I will be taking delivery of a new Solstice GXP. Can anyone give me some insight into these problems? All fluids are topped off and clean. Is it possible the power steering and tranny problems are related?

Wow, it sounds like you have really done something to this car. I don't know if your tranny and steering problems are related, but more like they are related to how you take care and drive your car, lol!

no, power steering and transmissions are two independent systems.

I would get your trans serviced as soon as possible and get them to look at it. If it's slipping now, it's only going to get worse and soon it won't go anywhere.

As for the PS, maybe somehow you introduced air into the system. Start the car, let it idle, then crank the wheel from lock to lock a bunch of times and see if that helps. If fluid levels are good and the belt is still turning the pump, you should be okay.

Try replacing the steering fluid by sucking as much out as possible with a turkey baster and refill with appropriate fluid, then bleed it as mentioned above.

As far as your tranny, good luck.
