because a team is a single noun, therefore the name is always singular. but in sports you add an 's' at the end of each team name. they're not making it plural. its still one team, not multiple.

John what does french have to do with anything???? They are the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS in the city of Toronto in the province of Ontatrio. The above answer about names and proper nouns is correct

Because "Leaves" refers to a group(more than one leaf). The symbol is the "Maple Leaf" - The organization is officially known as the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club. There is not more than one "Leaf" in the symbol, however, there is more than one person representing that symbol (The Leaf) hence, they are known as the Leafs

2. Because you don't have to be a good speller to play hockey.

Because it is a name and there are many variations of the spelling of names. Don't make to much out of it. Hockey nicknames are not subject to English rules of grammar just as peoples names aren't.
