to be (estar)This is temporary. It is used for feelings or temporary states.
yo estaba
el/ella estaba
ellos estaban
tu estabas
I was happy....yo estaba feliz.
I was at the store when you called....Yo estaba en la tienda cuando me llamaste.
If you are talking about an unchangeable situation, you have to use ser.
yo fui
el/ella fue
ellos fueron
tu fuiste
He was an only child: El fue hijo unico.
She was a doctor. Ella fue doctora.
A little complicated.

There are two different past tenses in Spanish so it depends on the context in which the term is used. It could be "estaba"

"Was" has two meanings in Spanish (as the past tense third person of the verb "to be"), as physically being (spacially: 'estar' in Sp) or condicionally being (meaning 'ser' in Sp):
If you are using was as a 'space' verb, example: 'he was at home when I phoned', was would be translated as: 'ESTABA' (el estaba en casa cuando yo llame).
If you are going to use it in the abstract form of 'being', as in: 'he was a good student', it would be translated as 'FUE' (el fue un buen estudiante).

It depends on how you intend to use the word. Whether it covers a period of time or whether it covers an event that happened.
