Colorado School of Mines (CSM or just Mines) is one of the premier engineering universities of the world. Mines is located in Golden about 15 miles west of Denver and about 20 miles south of Boulder. I've lived in all three towns. Each of these towns has its own very distinct character and ambiance.
Golden is a conservative college town of 17,000 residents located at the foot of Lookout Mountain. Golden served as the territorial capital of Colorado and it is a very popular tourist destination due to its western history and location at the entrance to the Rocky Mountains. The Coors Brewery is the largest brewery in the Western Hemisphere. Buffalo Bill is buried atop Lookout Mountain, and his grave and museum are popular attractions. Colorado School of Mines operates a Geology Museum and the Edgar Mine, an experimental working mine in Idaho Springs. Numerous attractions in the foothills west of Golden include the Georgetown Loop Scenic Railroad, Mount Evans Highway, Central City, and Black Hawk.
Denver is the capital of Colorado and the commercial and cultural center of the Denver metropolitan area with a combined population of 2,600,000. Golden has the advantage of being conveniently located near all the resources of a large metropolitan area, yet it maintains its small town feel.
Boulder is a college town of about 100,000 residents. Boulder also lies at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and is close to the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park. Boulder is every bit as liberal as Golden is conservative. Boulder sees itself as the avant-garde, while Golden prefers to stick to its 19th Century roots.

Are you people crazy?! Golden is an awesome town.
If you are bored in Golden, you're not getting off your couch. Golden offers more outdoor activity than most cities. Just walk along Clear Creek and you will find plenty to enjoy. The kayak park is a ton of fun and there is almost always an event or competition of some sort taking place.
On many evenings and weekends, goofy small town fairs or concerts can be enjoyed in the park. They are always entertaining.
Golden is definately quiet and laid back. Many people laugh when they discover there is actually a University in the middle of it, but it is ideal for the outdoor enthusiast and for someone who looking for something different.

Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory is in Boulder...Although really not much else to do in Boulder!!!
Ya' teens would probably enjoy seeing Red Rocks Amphitheater
Although food is not good...Casa Bonita is a must see on West Colfax

Denver is beautiful - 16th street mall has lots of shops / restaurants. Boulder is close also - go to Pearl street - shopping / restaurants. And of course Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful and a must see. In Golden the Coor's Light plant is there and they give tours on how beer is made.

Do you like to see shows? Our favorite thing in the Denver area is the Country Dinner Playhouse. Buffet dinner and a live musical show. Also, White Fence Farm restaurant. Great place to have dinner. Served family style, home made fried chicken, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and the best corn fritters in the world!!!
Denver Zoo is one of the greatest zoos around, Casa Bonita on Colfax is a MUST if you have kids.
My kids didn't like the Coors brewery.....it really stinks from the hops and barley and they can't taste anything there.

There is nothing to do in Golden except tour the Coors brewry or college. There are some outdoor things, but that's it.
Drive down to Boulder or Denver, they aren't that far away.
