...during the run up to the election? What are some reasons for the fluctuation of gas prices?

It's no coincidence. Recent price hikes have been blamed on minor refinery fires, refinery maintenance, not being "ready" with seasonal fuel blends and other ridiculous reasons. Now, with a recent refinery fire and the shutting down of the Alaska pipeline, the prices drop.

As for "supply and demand," with a steadily increasing population, number of vehicles being put on the road (particularly in countries where car ownership was extremely limited in the past) and worldwide industrial demands, this excuse just doesn't wash.

No coincidence at all. They generally drop at this time of year every year. Has nothing to do with the elections, but with "Supply and Demand". The summer traveling season ends Labor Day Weekend, and demand goes down. It also happens to be the same time the campaign season starts up, so people assume they are tied. But it happens in years when there is no general election.

It is a coincidence, but it is still a conspiracy. The Big Oil Companies (tm) have stopped price gouging, probably in hopes of avoiding congressional inquiries AFTER the elections. The BOCs couldn't care less abut what the great unwashed masses do with their votes, its the congress they're worried about.

My boyfriend's opinion is that gas prices are dropping because of the upcoming elections, but with winter right around the corner, the cost of heating will go up. There is no real escape from someone capitalizing on the things that the average person needs to survive!

supply and demand! and have u noticed that during every election dating back to the 80s the price of fuel has always gone down during the elections. Also keep your eye on the wholesale price of unleaded gas, the opec output and curde oil prices

No coincidence at all. The government relies on the people's (us) short term memory. Life is good, they must be doing something right and then we're stuck with them again for another term. Welcome to the wonderful world of politics.
