Use a 1 unless you're on a cell phone then you can drop the 1 and just use the area code and number. It use to be that if you used a 0 first, you were given the option of calling collect.

it depends if they are calling you from a cell phone or a land line. Most cell phones only require that you use the area code and the phone number. Land lines ( home phones) require the use of the 1+ the area code.
I live outside atlanta and now there are so many phone numbers that we MUST include the area code when making any call even if it's local to the person next door.

To call long distance, you dial 1 then the area code then the 7 digit phone number.
And no matter where you live, if you are calling outside your area code, you have to dial the area code, otherwwise the call will not go through.
