Because anesthesia can make you vomit.

When you have an general anaesthetic you are also give a muscle relaxant which effectively paralyses you while you're on the table. The reason for this is so you don't wriggle about (like you would while you're naturally asleep) while the surgeon is operating. If there is anything in your stomach, it will travel back up - you will either vomit or inhale it into your lungs.

The recommended fasting time is 6 hours for food, 4 hours for mixed fluids (i.e. clear soup, tea, coffee, milk etc.) and 2 hours for plain water. This is to do with the transit times through the stomach into the intestines. These guidelines were set by the American Assosiation of Anesthesiologists, which are generally followed worldwide.

It's also important not to eat too soon after major abdominal surgery, as there is a risk of developing something called paralytic ileus. This is where part of the intestine goes into spasm and the contents (which includes faecal matter) come back up through the stomach and is vomitted out. Not pleasant!

To avoid being sick while under anaesthetic take no notice of jessiekat i had a remark of her when i asked a question. People like her should be banned from answering questions.

The vomit answer is correct, but it's ALSO because, when you are anaesthetised, the body closes down all but the most vital systems (cerebral cortex, lungs, heart) and this includes the stomach - so you'd end up with undigested, bacterial food mush in your tum, which would make you very unwell after you came round...

I think its sopose to stop you from vomiting!!But how annoying not being able to eat all that time!!As if having the actual operation isnt bad enough they make you starve before hand!!! x

Purely because food can cause a reflux action and react to the anithetic. You would vomit and there would be a possibility of choking.

Sometimes when having general anesthesia it can make you vomit which can cause other problems. Plus it allows the anesthesia to work properly. Good luck!

Because the anaesthetic can cause you to vomit whilst unconscious and it can go into your lungs causing you do choke or cause lung infections and stomach acid is quite potent and can burn through tissue

and... it makes it easier to work. There is more room. And, because whenever you have surgery your bowels stop temporarily. If you stomach is empty there is less of a chance of a backed up system.

Because most people throw up after an anaesthetic.

It can make you quite ill. I was in hospital once and had something to eat after an op. I was very ill as the injection was still in my system.
