I want to play some videocassettes, view and edit them, and then convert them to dvd format. Can this be done? Do I need additional software? Do I use dvd-rw or what sort of format do I need? Can the average person do this or do I have to have special technical and/or computer knowledge? Perhaps, there is a website I can go to. I have lots of videos of my late father I want to be able to share with my family. My ultimate goal is to make a dvd with some of his favorite songs as background music. I have pictures and video, is it possible to have both on the same dvd? I appreciate any help you are able to give. Thanks.

You will need a graphics card with video in or more likely a tv card with video input connector. Then you just simply hook up your vcr/dvd player and use the software provided by the manufacturer of the card you are using to capture the video image to your disk drive. If you didn't get any software with your card then check the manufacturer's website and download it from there, or alternatively have a look on:
http://www.tv-cards.com/

Then you will need a simple video editing software (you can use windows movie maker which comes free with some versions of XP).

Good luck.

Yes . All you have to do is install a PCTV card ( you get in two types USB or PCI slot) onto your PC. Hook yr VCR output thro' a coaxial cable ( like the one you'll use to connect to the antenna port of your TV) onto the socket of PCTV card. Of course , you'd have installed the s/w supplied with the card . And run live to watch on your PC monitor . At any time you can click the record option ( make sure to have a few GBs free on yr disc) & save that as a file. The file thus saved can be saved onto a DVD ( if you have a DVD writer in yr PC - fine if not please hook one thro the USB port.)
Happy viewing & recording

I got a Panasonic dvd/vcr recorder that dubs wonderfully - 1 touch. Why not dub onto dvd, then use that to get it onto the computer for editing?

I tried a device to put vcr onto computer. The audio came up about half a second after the video.

you will need a capture card or USB device that allows playing the video and/or sound onto your computer. You will then need a recording device on the computer to record the incoming video/sound. Once you've done that, your dvd recorder (assuming you have one on your computer) should have come with software to produce a video dvd (or video cd).

Yes, you will need a tuner and you will need the image capture software (which will probably come with the Tuner Card)
