I was told by a marketing person, that the reason is Tuesday is historically one of the worst retail sales days of the week.

So releasing stuff on Tuesdays brings shoppers to the stores.

It's basically the same reasoning as releasing new items for Xmas.
When all the major retailers conclude that they have a slump in profits on a certain day, they work with their product providers to provide the solution. And in return the retailers do the same for them on the holidays. It is just a marketing strategy that gets people in the stores when the stores and manufacturers want us to.
