Firstly if you are serious about meaty audio editing, dont buy Dell. In fact if you are serious about doing anything on your computer apart from typing documents and browsing the web...dont buy Dell! Dell are great office computers, they are not exactly the best home PC's.

For £800 go to Scan and either piece it together yourself or get them to do it for you.

You want...

Corsair memory and not the value cr@p... only XMS or XMS2, 2GB minimum! (In the form of 2x1GB)

You want a dual core 64 bit processor, Intel or AMD...if you are on a budget I would suggest AMD

Motherboard, Asus or Abit - cant go wrong.

Disks - Anything SATA - It may be cheaper and faster to buy 2x250GB disks instead of 1x500GB disks. In that case set them up as RAID 0 (striping)

Most mb's will have onboard audio (particulary recommend the Asus Crosshair). Failing that get a real soundblaster Audigy.
Soundblaster havent been market leader for years for no reason.

Graphics card - Anything with an nvidia or ATI chipset will do. this will probably be the biggest factor based on budget. Anything from £40 to £400 for an off the shelf card, use this to adjust your budget you can always change it later.

Apart from that you will need the following:

CPU Fan
Power Supply
Case
Keyboard
Mouse
DVD Drive
(Maybe a floppy - still usefull occaisionally)

Thats all you need to make a comp.

Sorry to sound like an advert but from past experience Scan are the best at getting you a custom systems and will even put them together for you. (Look at their 3XS systems)

Using this you will get far superior performance and upgradability that anything from Dell.

I have purchased around 10 Dell refurbs over the last several years, both for myself and friends. I have had good luck with all but one of them, which we had to spend some time with Dell on the phone and they finally just replaced it with a new unit of the same model. So that can be a decent way to go for a new pc. Also, I'd go with the fastest processor, and personally have had very good experiences with the AMD processors, so don't be scared of them. Also if you have room there's no need for a mini-tower, since you typically have to give up some USB ports or memory slots to get the smaller case.

The best processor in that price range is the intel core 2 duo e6600.
You will probably want to upgrade from 1 GB ram to 2 GB. If you want to do gaming you should get a radeon x1900 video card. that will cost extra, but the video card is the most important thing for a gaming computer.

I once tried to buy on-line from Dell. I really needed that new wp and I waited anxiously for the ten days it was supposed to take and then (with great difficulty) managed to locate a phone number for them. I spoke to a gentleman in India who couldn't trace my order at first, but eventually announced (without a hint of apology in his voice!) that my order "had been unaccountably cancelled!" I simply gave up at this point and decided to buy from a store. I thought I'd better warn you before you go ahead!

As long as you get the intel centrino duo processor you should be fine. That is what I have on my laptop and I am very happy with it.
