You could take him to court but you still might not get the money!

Try consulting Citizens Advice Bureau in the first instance as this is a free service. If you consulted a solicitor, you might be throwing good money after bad.

I had a similar problem so when I left I caused damage to the property worth about 3 times more than what I was owed. That showed 'em!

Just don't leave a forwarding address.

Is his name Alex by any possible chance? Just, I had the same thing in Southampton. If you have contact details for him you can take him to the Small Claims Court (you have your rep, they have theirs, you sit round a big table in a room, it's not a big court room or anything). Go to the Citizens Advice Bureau in your area, they will be able to advise you more.

set him up, get it on camera. Otherwise contatc the watchdog programm. They have had success with that.
