Why does everyone attack the asker? Thanks rowster but I live in the inner city and I don't actually own a television.

I have been to eight other countries and I find it to be true.
Of the countries I have been to it seems like they are much more family orientated. If they have food and shelter they feel that it is more important to spend time with their families.

I think you're watching too much television. The almightly dollar rules when you turn on the set. But go into the neighborhoods of real communities, not plastic ones, and you'll see that there are plenty of regular people living regular lives very happily. It's all about what you make of it. It's hard since there's always something you could buy or do, but not everyone is about money. When you look at the older generations that have learned from their mistakes and sacrificed for their children you'll see that.
I do think that the government has a spending issue that left as is will turn this nation upside down eventually. We are a rich country compared to most. When you get a credit card and charge it up then you get another....and another, you eventually end up broke and in jeapardy of losing everything. I hope that doesn't happen to this country.
I worry about money. I worry about being able to retire, being able to put my kids through college, and being able to provide the necessities. If I had more money then I'd save most and spend a little more. Everyone's different. But most people don't have gold grills and a wad of 100's to flash.

Ego!
We are all focused on protecting ourselves and furthing the self rather than group. We are concerned about having enough money for ourself to survive, we always need to have more, have a surplus. We always have to be better than the next person or country and if we are second place, we are failures. So we fight hard to stay on top.

If America could embrace self-sacrifice and truly put thy neighbors best interest ahead of our own then we will be a tranquil society.

But watch out for the other 'takers' out there.

I think we are materialistic people in the US. Other countries seem to not be as bad.
