What software are you trying to use? Skype? Yahoo Messenger? Just having a microphone plugged in doesn't give you the ability to make calls...

Try using the "Sound Recorder" under (Windows XP) All Programs -> Accesories -> Entertainment and see if you can record anything using it. That will prove useful to you to find out if your microphone is working or not.

Because you need to plug your mic into the pc,and you call from your pc.

May be your sound card is no more working
