Stiff Kittens (named by Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks and disliked by the band), changed their name to Warsaw, named after a Bowie track. They then renamed themselves due to a similarity to another band's name, Warsaw Pact, to Joy Division, a name taken from a novel about Nazi concentration camps for the prostitute wings. The band agreed that if any of their members ever left they would rename themselves - this happened due to the suicide of their lead singer, Ian Curtis. The band eventually settled on New Order

Prior to being New Order, they were all in Joy Division (except, I think the keyboard player) but even prior to being Joy Division, they were known as Warsaw.
