Real pearls only-
depending on the quality, size, color of each $5-20 in a strand.
Pearls come with paperwork, just like diamonds. [its totally different things, yet that paperwork estabilishs the quality of that gem] I own white, pink, yellow and my largest collection is in black. There are lots to choose from out there! Good luck!
Depending on the quality of the pearl and designer or Jewelry shop an 18" string of size 6.5, white, pink or yellow hues will run $1000 to $8000. Buy your matching earrings at the same time if they have them. Cultured pearls change at every harvest, so its best to get it together from the same batch if possible.
Summer time is a great time for sales. WATCH Macy's fine jewelry department, they have 30-60% off one day sales.
I actually got a 18", size 7, black string for $860..... that was literally 75% off the original price $3,450.... it was a one day sale and I had a coupon, a Macy's card and WHOA!
I adore pearls- the addiction started at age 19, when I opened a $5 oyster in Hawaii and got a black pearl. The shop guy offered be $ 200 then stopped at $500 "on the spot" when I was rinsing it off. I was just too "happy" said NO....got home and it was appraised at $ 7,000..it is the perfect pearl.. it is worth more than any single diamond in my jewelry box. I got the necklace (deal listed above) to match it. ha ha . Its black with purple/green/mother of pearl all naturally, mounted in a great custom ring. It will be an heirloom to my children. Along with a copy of this story and its insurance papers. Let hope it never sees ebay or a pawn shop.
Cheaper real pearls can be HAD! Jewerly shows sell them in "strings" and you have to make them into what you want, just be careful that you know what your getting. No paper work on these guys. I literally purchased real pearls for my wedding dress and hand sewed 200+ to the bodice of my gown and 25 a piece on each sleeve. and 30 on my veil (my age) at the time.
Great looking fake ones are available with costume jewelry like Monet brand.. I recommend if you wear fake, wear a realistic looking pearl size and color/shape. I love them and wear them to work, most average folks can't tell and won't ask either.
In case you ever wondered- the string of pearls around Barbara Bushs neck are about $10,000+ They are reserve Makito pearls.

Real pearls cost a great deal more than fake ones. They go into hundreds of dollars depending on the Company that's selling them, whether or not they are fresh water pearls as opposed to cultured pearls (more expensive), their size and weight, their color, etc. There is no "set" price for pearls. There is the process of gaining the pearls and cultivating them that is costly. But once you get them, they will last and last--no need to replace them, but they may be restrung because the string does not last as long as the pearls.
All the best

It depends on the grade, there like diamonds in a way. There are differnt colors and sizes and qualities. If you find a strain under 100$ on sale there probally low quality or there not good circles off a tad.

i guess it varies, but in maui, at this one store, you can buy a clam for 12 dollars and if it has a pearl in it, you get to keep it.

It depends on size, type, and color. You would have to be more specific.
