The purse was in plastic when I bought it. My friend bought the same purse and hers wasn't in plastic and it doesn't smell. When I cleaned it, I washed it inside and out and let it air dry. It didn't smell bas when it was wet, only after it dried.

Try resealing it in plastic with something like a fabric softener sheet and leaving it for a while. Charcoal and/or baking soda have been known to help remove odors.

wet the purse again, crumple up newspaper and fill the inside. The paper will absorb the smell.

Spray the thing wet with Lysol disinfectant, then dry in sunlight. This spray is 80% alchohol, so be careful of dyed colors and glued edges, but the other stuff init will kill any bacteria or mold.

Strange. I wonder if it was stored someplace that smelled like that. I think I would have to get rid of it.
