I have a computer in the front room of my house and it has a broad band internet connection. My xbox 360 is upstairs in my room and I would like to access xbox 360 live. I've heard there are different methods of playing online but I'd rather use the option where I don't have to move my xbox downstairs, or my computer upstairs.

1. What is my best set up option? (Could you please explain this in some detail)

2. If I set this up as described above, can I play xbox live upstairs, and allow somebody down stairs to surf the net as normal or can you only play online when no body else is using the computer?

you will need to get a router or wireless router.

you can connect your 360 to this a well as your pc.

you will also need a long network cable/crossover cable.

or you can connect the pc & 360 via a wireless adaptor that connects to the router. 360 adaptor about £60 and pc adaptor £30.

you will be able to surf the net and game all you want with these things but at least 8megs on the internet connection. you can have less but you will expierence lag on xbox live.

Well you need a Router and a long ethernet cable. Put one ethernet cable from the modem into the router. then run one into the 360 and run one into the computer. Use the computer to set up the router, the instructions should come with it. Anway having it split like that and you can be on XBOX Live as well as the computer being on the net.

You can get a wireless adapter for the xbox, but that's expensive (around 100$). Another option, is connecting a laptop to the xbox and using it as a wireless adapter with ICS (internet connection sharing) - search youtube for it if you are interested in that. Another option can be using a switch, which is like a "station" for the cable, where you can connect another cable from it to your computer, but buying a longer ethernet cable is more simple - you can get one in any normal computer / gamers store.
