Mine do that too. I haven't found anything online about that but I've been told by fish geeky people in my aquarium club that cichlids do that. Quick cure dosed for 1 week at 1 drop per gallon daily didn't resolve it.
The first thing I'd do is to test the water and make sure it's happy (ammonia=0, nitrIte0, nitrAte < 40ppm, pH, KH and GH in their desired range).
Second, examine them closely.
White spots like grains of salt would be ich
Extra slime that looks white would be costia
a yellow sheen (especially noticable with a flashlight) would be velvet
Flukes could also cause flashing and it takes a microscope to diagnose those. I routinely treat my goldfish for flukes with praziquantel (it's very safe), so that might be something to try if there aren't any symptoms of other parasites.

Since you know about fungus, i won't ask a dumb question about ick. Honestly, more than likely they are iching themselves. Do you feed them feeder fish or shrimp? If you do, they might stuff themselved and when they rub on the rock, they are moving the fish around in there gut for digestion, and just becuase they have an uncomfortable buldge. This would be might best guess without seeing them do it. Hope this helps!

No, you are right, most cichlids are okay concerning fungal infection BUT... since they are brackish fish, they do get parasites and worms.
Go to your pet store and ask for something to condition the water with that makes an uncomfortable enviornment for parasites and worms to thrive... Not sure what it is called, I don't remember, sorry?

cichlids are territorial fish and they like to dig. they rub on rocks and other hard surfaces for many reasons.
1- to try to move the object
2 - to scratch an itch
3 - to remove old scales
4 - to mark territory
5 - if felt threatened by object

Check the nitrates. When they get elevated the bacteria levels increase and start to irritate the fish. Reduce them to a level until the fish stop

Unless you see small white spots on it, I would just say it is itching itself. Fish will do that to knock off old bad scales and dirt. Ich is something that is seen.

Your fish sounds like it has ich. Look in some pet stores for books on fish. They should be able to help you. Good Luck .

It might be caused by some fungus, try to put a little pinch of KMnO4 (potassium permanganate) for a few days.

Look at them closely for ick. It is very itchy and they do this to scratch themselves. It also can be something else that is itchy.
