One of the things that irritates me about Yahoo answers is that, all too often, people asking questions have already made their minds up about the answer and simply pick the one that agrees with their own opinion, rather than taking on board new knowledge. If people have already made their minds up, why do they come here to ask the question?

Then there's that 'voting' thing that happens to unresolved questions. Time and again I see answers being selected by majority vote that are a load of old tosh. Then everyone who voted for the answer can congratulate themselves that they were 'right'.

Democracy is a great thing for turning people's opinions into policy, but opinons and facts are not the same thing. I'm not against relativism but when people take this too far they wind up saying things like 'Such-and-such is just a theory, and why shouldn't my theory be just as good?' as if all theories should be considered equals.

Does Yahoo! Answers encourage this kind of woolly thinking?

Oooh, I see a lot of defensive people here!

Geedebb - Yes, I KNOW the 'yahoo team' aren't out to promote any particular creed or viewpoint - they simply provide the platform. But Yahoo! Answers is not just platform, but platform+content, provided by you the users. I was asking whether Y!A when taken as a whole encourages this type of thinking.

Oh - and actually, I am relaxed and enjoying myself, thanks!

Bethe - "Truth or facts? Everyone's truth is different anyway..."

Heh heh. What a perfect example of exactly what I was saying. Everyone's truth is different anyway - so no one 'truth' is superior to any other 'truth', right?

So go jump out the window from the 20th floor of a building - just because it's true for some people that this would result in fatal injuries, doesn't mean it has to be true for you, does it? The alternative 'truth' that you can easily survive this is just as good a truth as the truth that says you'll turn into pavement pizza, right?

I like to think this is a little corner of the world where we may speak freely without reprisals or being shut down by hate mongers.

Occasionally there are hate mongers in here. But they don't last long because the good and fair minded among us report them and get them outta here.

Truth or facts? Everyone's truth is different anyway...what difference will it make if your experiential truth is acepted by a majority of Y/A participants?
