I did it for the simple reason that when my son was born I had to have transfusions which saved my life. I hope I've helped somebody else.

I'm a blood donor and have been for a while although i have only donated once due o health reasons.

giving blood saves peoples life's and makes the chance for someone to receive a blood transfusion that matches there blood type higher.

people need blood transfusions all the time but alot of people have rare blood groups that's why it is important for people of all ethnic backgrounds to register on the blood donor list.

Good luck the first time is always more scarier than the further times.

Yes .. and also on the bone marrow donors list. Sometimes I just gaze out at the sky and wonder who and where and in what circumstances my blood is being used. Why do it ? .. because I accept that life has been good to me in a so many ways esp. with good health allowing me to do virtually what I want when others have had the misfortune to need operations and transfusions. Sometimes its uncomfortable and a bit inconvenient but that's a small price to pay. I think the UK method is good, I wouldn't like a system where people sell their blood.

I used to until I realized the hospital charges for the blood we donate..pretty sick, but it is the biggest money making scam in the book...the only way I give now is if I have a friend or relative that is getting a procedure and may need blood...and I will then donate it to that person so they can get the "units of blood" for free and just pay for the process of the transfusion etc. I heard a rumor that you can actually get paid for you blood donation, but I am not sure that is true....units of blood are VERY expensive...too bad, we don't get a piece of the pie!

I give blood not regularly but when I can. I am o- which is a universal donor. I guess I give blood because I can. I am in good health and can get around. I hope that if I or some one I love needs blood it will be there for them.

I would love to donate blood but I do not weigh enough. I am grateful to anyone who does. I have some really good friends and family in my life, My son had surgery a few years back and I needed blood donors for him and they stepped up to the plate. So to anyone who donates blood God Bless You...

i am not a blood doner but would love to be one however I cant for medical reasons as I had a transfusion before all the new clearing procedures come in for doner blood. I am OK but just cant be one.
The reason for being a doner is that blood is in short supply and they need many doner people as possible. That you may have a rare blood type so your blood would be like gold and much needed.
It saves lives of hundreds of people who need a transfusion I would have died without all the blood I had to have.

I'm not a blood donor. I would love to be able to, to help others. I really like the idea of it. The reason that I'm not is that I'm a chicken when it comes to needles, I even struggle watching Casualty or Holby.

I think you should. But i'm a hypocrit to say that because i don't. I went with my dad once because he's a donor but i'm so scared of needles that despite the unbarable heat in the place, i was freezing cold from the panic and they couldn't get any blood out of me because they couldn't find a vein so went i through all that for nothing!!!!

I started being a blood donor on the first anniverary of my brother-in-laws death from Meningitis, it seemed fitting as he was always a self-less person and would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it.
