I consider it to be a job. You providing a service for someone and they are paying you. How is that not a job?

the taking care of children isn't looked upon as important in society as it really should. If you were labeled as the tomorrow's caretaker I doubt it would make any difference. Stay at home moms and homemakers today are frowned upon. Women should be at real jobs... but at some point the real job holders have to realise that babysitting is a job and one that is very highly important. More kids need babysitters rather than being left home alone with a teenager that leaves as soon as mom and dad leave the street.

Baby sitting is seen more as a favour I suppose that you just happen to be given some money for.

The progression from that would be a nanny or something similar.

It's a very important job. You are taking care of someone else's children. You hold the key to their safety, and well being while the parents are away. I don't know who told you it wasn't important, because they're so wrong!

It is work, and requires discipline and responsibility, but employers want work history that is relevant to their line of business. It's hard to quantify babysitting into a method of measuring an employee as opposed to so called "real" work history.

It is, except that in most cases income is not reported so taxes are not paid. You are right though. I would rather run a Fortune 500 company than babysit day after day. Kids are awesome...... when they are your own. :)
