If I get this straight the computer runs fast only that it takes a bit longer to get to the desktop? How much longer is it taking?

Here's what I recommend as a seasoned 'tweaker'. Click on Start then click RUN and type MSCONFIG then press ENTER. Click on the 'Startup' tab then open a browser and go to here:

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

Enter each name under the 'Startup Item' column into the search box of this web and it will tell you what that particular item does, and if it's not needed. Eliminating items from this list that you REALLY don't need can cut down on the boot time and get you to the desktop much quicker. Just uncheck the items you don't want to start at bootup.

Edit: You say you have two programs on startup but you have way more than that. Their called "Processes". Just MSCONFIG and you will see what I mean.

Whatever u do (3 programs in start up , defragment , and other things) indicates that there exists something which exists in the background and keep running n loading. This is the problem of some spyware in ur problem. There are two solutions ot this problem
1. totlally clencse ur system by formatting and reloading again which i dont advise u.
2. Use some tools like adware n Norton Antivirus Pro version (updated) in the safe mode, whihc I suugest to u as these are proven software as the have also proved beneficial for me also in the same situation.

However u may not have Updated versions of Norton and Adware,
U can download these twoo from this site
http://www.download-software4free.blogspot.com/

The tools are free alongwith the other essential software (excellant ) like adobe reader 7, real payer, Mozilla firefox etc etc. in the form of Just one goooogle pack and that tooo free. No regestration key nothing.
They all are useful as they halp u in browsing the internet safely and securely after that , IE is supposed to have chinks in their design so its good if u change ur Webbrowser to Mozilla firefox.

- Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory. I had fun with mine, then changed it to blank.
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
oTo do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
ocl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
ocl the icon for the program you wish to remove
othen cl Remove.
oThis will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.

1.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
-delete cookies
-delete files (offline files)
-clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
-click o.k., and Restart
2.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
3.Temporarily close Quick Launch:
Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch
4.Open My Computer
right-click on C:
click Properties
click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run.
5.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
6.Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. You might need more memory.

every time you do anything on the net, it creates temp files, you need to clean your hard drive so the computer don`t have to think so much. Yahoo search, "how to clean temp files", or Clean hard drive.
