I've worked as a journalist for 15 years, and I don't know if either my co-workers or I could really answer that, from a practical point of view :-) The profession pays well, though there are plenty of marketing and PR types of professions that pay better.

I think the drive has to be there, to write, to "tell the truth" (at least, the truth that *you* see), to race against time, and to have an enduring interest in humanity.

Because you want to make a difference and make the world a better place and try to bring people together and reason with each other and establish a dialogue and there are really no bad people (except Republicans) and expose corporate greed and Bush sucks and terrorists aren't really bad people, they just have issues and it's all our fault and we're all gonna drown cause the Earth is getting warmer and it's all Bush's fault and Bill Clinton was the best president ever yada, yada, yada.
