You are more or less forced to bloody enjoy yourself , visiting people you don't see from year to year , with stupid shity 'small-talk'. Tactfulness and diplomacy 'goes out of the window' after a bevvy, which lead to trivial arguments. I'm heading to the hills!!. With commercialism ruling the roost in today's life , has Xmas completely lost it's appeal.......Discuss

Christmas is far too commercialised and everyone has such high expectations that there is inevitably some disappointment.

Luckily, my parents (now divorced and with other partners) don't foist themselves on us like they used to so the four of us can do what the hell we like. We don't eat turkey (or any poultry come to that) and take a long time over Christmas lunch, doing other things between courses.

We invite friends round - but only those we know we will enjoy the company of and this year, we'll probably play silly games, have a go on karaoke (but only after enough alcohol!) and find a pub that's open so we can walk there and back (thus getting fresh air and exercise)

If all that fails, we're off to the races on Boxing Day!

I agree in some ways but as I'm getting older I seem to enjoy it more each year. I've no children so I make the most of it with family.

I'd love to have a x-mas away somewhere but so far it's a pipe dream.

It is too commercialised but what I really hate is all that money people spend and I'm sure half the presents purchased are never used. Which is why I make a list.

Two years ago, I went on a 'Christmas, Bah Humbug' break in the Cotswolds. For 3 days No Christmas decorations, no turkey, (there was steak and kidney pie, Chicken kiev, Fish, gammon steak or sausages and mash!) No Christmas programmes on the TV (there were all sorts of Videos and DVD's to watch instead, and NOBODY mentioned the word Christmas at all, and you know what? - It was Bliss!!!! definitley something i will do again - Christmas looses it's appeal to me, somewhere around mid October....I just wish the shops wouldn't start with the festive stuff in September - seems soon as the kids are back to school, it's in with the santa stuff- well no thanks!!!

I like to think about christmas in december. I saw a bloody christmas tree in my local sainsburys yesterday !!!! the worlds gone nuts.

I prefer to know I can get cosy at home with my mum, dad, brother and sister and boyfriend - and not worry about the rest of the family. I think boxing day should be for seeing the people you cant stand - and you should be hung over enough that you dont care about what they are saying. hehe

Life is too short to look at things so miserably. If you don't visit relatives during christmas, then you probably would never see them at all. I love Christmas. It reminds me to open up to people and to believe again. If there is someone that I absolutely don't want to see around christmastime, then I just wouldn't see them. Try something new this year and change your paradigm.

I agree to some extent. We've down-sized Christmas and have decided to go away at least every other year to be away from family and friends. That way, we're at a resort or some foreign city and there's no pressure. Nobody's happy about it, except us. And we make sure to tell people, NO PRESENTS!

Oh it does completely!!!
I can believe the shops are selling Xmas stuff already, I mean its only just october. To me the spirit of christmas has gone, theres no exitement at all (unless you have kids)
Cant beat going abroad just to escape it all!!

All Christian holidays piss me off. Christ-mess especially. Like buying shiny doodads for all the whores on your list is going to make some imaginary god swell with pride, and angelic servants are going to rush you to the front of the Heaven-line.

Yes, I hate people who say Xmas

it is Christmas. Not Xmas.

Try thinking about positive charitable thoughts.

Otherwise, just skip it.
