I recently got married. I have 2 kids from a previous marriage and they have my maiden name. I wanted to keep my maiden name so that it would not cause confusion with my kids name in school and what not. I also thought about hyphenating my name ( which I always thought was stupid until now). My husband's feeling are slightly hurt because I have not changed my name legally yet. it has been 7 months.

What I want to know is .... If I simply hyphenate my last name can I just change my license and ss #? Or do I have to go through all of my documents. I also know that I have to change my banking records.

I thought that if your name was hyphenated, you could use either lthe whole name, or the maiden name on non legal matters

This sounds very confusing.

For everyone that wants to know, my kids have my maiden name because their "biological father" was a piece of crap and left me when I was pregnant. I didnt want them to have to be associated with trash. They were babies when it was done, so they wouldnt have been affected with the change

My mom kept her name so hers matched ours. Plus, by the time she remarried, professionally she was known by that name and changing it would have confused people. She was almost 40 anyway. She still used her new married name when attending events with her husband and other issues where the legality of the name did not matter. She did divorce again so it saved her a lot of problems.

OK..when I got married I took his name and had 2 kids. All have his name. 8yrs later we divorced, they kept his name as did I. I am now remarried and I took my now husband's name and have 2more kids with his name. No one cares who has what last name...we're still a family. It's not as hard to change your name after marriage as one would think.

WHY WOULD YOUR KIDS HAVE YOUR MAIDEN NAME IF YOU WERE MARRIED?
I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A STUPID DECISIONS BY MOTHERS. MY MIL GOT DIVORCED WHEN HER KIDS WERE IN THERE THIRTIES AND TOOK THERE LAST NAME BACK,EVEN THOUGH SHE HAD BEEN DIVORCED FROM THE MAN FOR 25 YEARS, FOR THE KIDS.
STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. YOUR KIDS DON'T CARE.

have your new husband legally adopt them...then you can all have the same last name with no hyphens! and you can be one big happy family =0)

I'm not sure about that but you shouldn't have to change your SSN for that.
